I have always thought of the Isle of Wight being a pleasant peaceful place, known for the needles, Cowes weekend (or week I cant remember) the occasional rock concert and a maximum security prison. But it seems according to at least one facebook page it is run by facist dictators. At least with regard to their flag. Back in ancient history I have heard tell that the island was simply represented by a Cross of St George Latterly the flag was changed to the one shown below,
The flag is quite nice, and it concentrates on the history of the island, the castle is Carisbroke castle where King Charles II was imprisoned. This flag sold commercially until the Island had a vote and decided on this one which is now the official flag
This unimaginative soul-less design was adopted, presumably because it was easy. It really says nothing about the Island except it is an island. This so upset some people that they have created another flag, the 'rebel green' Personally I cant think of anywhere less rebellious than the genteel Isle of Wight. As far as I know the flag has no real historical stature, except to annoy the Island's authorities. The 'rebel green' people have launched a facebook page, though with only 39 supporters it hardly seems like a popular uprising. You can find it here
