The traditional county of Huntingdonshire ceased to exist as a separate entity in 1974 when the county council was abolished. The area of the county was merged with neighbouring “Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely” to form an enlarged “Cambridgeshire”. The traditional county is now administered as a ““district” within the larger body but this is an arrangement that dissatisfies many local residents. The arms of the traditional county, retained by the modern “district” , are a complex design, with elements representing the county’s agriculture.

The details of the shield, in the coat of arms, do not make an effective or attractive flag .

However, the arms are unusual as the crest that appears above the central shield actually includes a flag, held aloft by the red rampant lion.
