Here is an interesting idea from Philip Tibbets. He proposes a black country flag. Now I have never been really sure where the black country is or how it got it's name so the idea of it having it's own flag is interesting! Philip writes: The design rationale is as follows: Being the Black Country the flag should be black, to choose otherwise would be counter-intuitive. The yellow saltire represents the ancient kingdom of Mercia showing the heritage of the area and it is toothed. This denotes gear teeth for industry and also has a social meaning of how opposites can mesh together to drive forward as a symbol of community. The red bands echo the comments by Elihu Burritt (the American Consul to Birmingham) in 1862 that the area was ‘Black by day and red by night’. The red (denoting the night from the quotation) is on the sides to symbolise that stars move across the sky whilst this leaves the top and bottom quarters plain black (for the day) to denote sunrise and sunset. Finally, the saltire chain in white denotes heavy industry and again has a social meaning representing the four corners of the Black Country pulling together.
