Cornwall is the one English county with claims for autonomy if not independence. The Cornish flag is the cross of St Piran it is black with a white cross. The significance of the colours differs depending on who you talk to! It may have it's origin with tin mining or possibly with light shining through the dark (evil). There are in fact three contenders for Cornish patron saint,St Michael and St Petroc being the other runners but St Piran appears to be favoured. The advocates of indepencence are more likely to refer to Cornwall as Kernow, the celtic name. Cornwall also has a language which is closely linked to Breton and Welsh. The flag is extremely popular in Cornwall and with the Cornish Diaspora around the world. |
