Shropshire is another historic county which has survived the march of time. Annexed by King Offa of Mercia the county is still covered by the West Mercia Constabulary. King Offa built Offa's dyke along the border with Wales. The coat of arms shows three lions or leopards on a blue and yellow shield. (the same colours as Shrewsbury Town F.C.)
I cannot find any sources on the history behind he coat of arms so perhaps someone could enlighten me? Here is the commercially available flag:
Many thanks to Liz Woodall who writes "What I can tell you is that the three heads are known in the county as loggerheads (leopard's heads), and there is a small town of the same name on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border." And she goes on to say that the coat of arms was developed by the county council in 1896. So not particualrly historic by English standards! |
